Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born on 2nd October 1869 and passing away on 30th January 1948, played a vital role in India’s fight for independence from British rule. Gandhi, also known as Bapu in India, came from a Hindu family in Gujarat. He worked as a lawyer and strongly opposed British colonization. Gandhi was easily recognizable in his traditional Indian attire, wearing a Dhoti and shawl, both handwoven using a Charkha.

In 1930, Gandhi led a significant protest against the British-imposed Salt tax by organizing the 400km-long Dandi Salt march. People in India celebrate his birthday on the 2nd of October as Gandhi Jayanti. Gandhi is renowned for his commitment to non-violence as a guiding principle.

Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh (1907 – 23 March 1931) was an Indian hero who fought against British rule. He became famous for using violence against the British, and he was executed for his actions. Bhagat Singh was part of a group that opposed British rule in India. When the police killed Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh wanted revenge, so he took part in killing a British police officer. His bravery inspired young people in India to continue the struggle for independence.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak

Bal Gangadhar Tilak (23 July 1856 – 1 August 1920) was an important leader in India who wanted freedom from British rule. People called him “Lokmanya,” meaning they accepted him as their leader. He strongly believed in “Swaraj,” which means people ruling themselves.

Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru, born on 14th November 1889 and passing away on 27th May 1964, was the first Prime Minister of India and an activist for Indian Independence. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and the Inner Temple to become a barrister. When he came back to India, he got involved in national politics. With him leading, the Congress party became strong and won elections one after the other.

Bhimrao Ambedkar

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956) was a smart person from India. He knew a lot about laws, money, and politics. He helped make India’s rules and was the first Law and Justice Minister. Dr. Ambedkar also worked hard to stop people from treating Dalits (untouchables) badly. This made a big difference. He later helped with India’s freedom and wrote in newspapers about it. He talked a lot about people having the right to choose their leaders.
