The tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, was born on December 22, 1666, in Patna. Every year, people celebrate his birthday, known as Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, based on the lunar calendar. He became a Sikh guru at just nine years old after his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, passed away.
Guru Gobind Singh’s teachings have inspired many people, but sadly, he was assassinated in 1708 at the age of 41. On this day, people give clothes and food to those in need. They gather in large groups, sing songs, pray in the gurudwara, and share food with both adults and children.
Guru Gobind Singh had four sons, all of whom lost their lives during his lifetime. He also introduced the five K’s for Sikhs, which include Kesh (uncut hair), Kangha (a wooden comb), Kara (an iron or steel bracelet worn on the wrist), Kirpan (a sword), and Kacchera (short breeches).
Not only that but in 1699, he founded the Sikh warrior community known as Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh was a poet, spiritual leader, philosopher, warrior, and writer.
